Sapphire, mineral or Hesalite? Your watch crystal is one of the three.

Sapphire: lab-grown corundum, 9 on the Mohs scale. Resists everyday scratches, but a hard knock can chip or crack it.
Mineral glass: hardened glass. Costs less and scratches more easily.
Hesalite: acrylic. Scuffs easily, but light scratches polish out, and it tends to crack rather than shatter.

Swap a strap in 10 seconds, no tools needed.

Look for quick-release spring bars, the ones with a tiny lever on the back of the strap.

1. Slide the lever with your fingernail and the strap pops out.
2. Pull the lever on the new strap, line the bar up with the lug hole and let go.
3. Give it a firm tug to make sure it's locked in.

Something is being built for collectors.

Every watch. Every reference. One place.

Turn on notifications so you're here when it opens.

Never set the date on a mechanical watch late at night.

On many movements, the date change starts hours before midnight, roughly between 9 PM and 3 AM. Forcing the quick-set date while those gears are engaged can damage the mechanism.

The safe order:
1. Turn the hands to around 6 o'clock.
2. Set the date.
3. Set the time.

Your manual has the exact window for your watch.

Ever wonder why the crown sits at 3 o'clock?

Most people are right-handed, and traditionally the watch goes on the left wrist, so the right hand does the winding and setting. On the right side of the case, the crown is easy to reach and stays clear of your wrist.

Left-handed? Look for a destro watch, with the crown on the left side at 9 o'clock. Some dive watches move it to 4 o'clock so it doesn't dig into the back of your hand.

Hand-wound watches need a little ritual. Three rules:

1. Take it off your wrist, so you're not stressing the crown stem.
2. Turn the crown clockwise, slow and steady. Many watches take around 30 to 40 turns, but your manual has the real number.
3. When you feel it tighten, stop. Never force it.

Bonus: wind at the same time every day for steadier timekeeping.

30 meters of water resistance is not 30 meters of swimming.

The rating comes from a static pressure test in a lab, not a depth you can take it to. As a general guide (always check your manual):
30 m / 3 ATM: rain and hand washing
50 m / 5 ATM: a light swim, for many brands
100 m / 10 ATM: swimming and snorkeling
Diving: look for a true ISO 6425 dive watch

Gaskets age, so have it pressure tested at every service.

What's the rating on the watch you're wearing right now?

Stop shopping by case diameter.

Two 40 mm watches can wear completely differently. The number that decides fit is lug to lug: the distance from the tip of the top lugs to the tip of the bottom lugs.

Measure the flat top of your wrist. If the lug to lug is shorter than that, the watch will usually sit well.

What's your flat wrist width, and what's the best-fitting watch you own? Tell us below.

Save this for your next watch hunt.

Why does your watch glow in the dark, and why is it dimmer by morning?

Most modern lume, like Super-LumiNova, isn't radioactive. It charges with light and releases it slowly, so it's brightest right after sunlight and fades through the night.

Vintage is a different story. Early dials used radium, and later ones used tritium, which glowed on its own. If you own an old piece, leave the dial work to a professional.

Quick trick: give your watch a minute under a bright light before bed.
